Paris Saint-Germain could be forced into stripping apart their star-studded squad due to the astronomical wages paid out to Neymar and Lionel Messi – with new Ligue 1 rules set to hit the champions
Paris Saint-Germain will have to cut their players’ wage bill this summer and could be forced into selling either Neymar or Lionel Messi – as the pair of megastars earn £1.6million combined per week.
A whopping 18 out of Ligue 1’s top-20 highest earners play for the Parisians, who recently won the league title for the tenth time. As a result, the French league is set to launch new restrictions over wage bills, which could force them into dramatic changes.
The DNCG, the financial body in charge of supervising the French clubs’ accounts, stated that clubs will not be able to have a wage bill greater than 70 per-cent of its income. As it stands, PSG are well over that percentage, with it being close to 91 per-cent.
In order to comply with the new changes, the club will have to make significant cuts this summer. Brazilian playmaker Neymar, who joined the French side on a £198m world-record deal back in 2017, earns £850,000 in monthly wages.
Messi is said to earn £700,000 per-week and the third highest earner in the squad, Kylian Mbappe, earns a staggering £460,000 weekly salary. PSG could see their wage bill chopped significantly this summer with Mbappe’s departure, however, as the forward is believed to be on his way to Champions League finalists Real Madrid.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the time may have come to part ways with Neymar as well. PSG have reportedly slapped a relatively low asking price of £76m on the forward, as the club is seemingly ready to take a loss on the world’s most expensive player.
